Modern electric cars primarily use lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion technology is favored because it combines relatively high energy density with good efficiency, rechargeability, and a long cycle life. Higher energy density allows an electric car to store substantial driving range without making its battery pack impossibly large or heavy. The battery pack sends direct current to the vehicle’s power electronics, which then drives the electric motor.

“Lithium-ion battery” describes a broad family rather than one single chemistry. Common electric-car variants include nickel-manganese-cobalt, nickel-cobalt-aluminum, and lithium iron phosphate, usually abbreviated NMC, NCA, and LFP. LFP batteries generally use less expensive and less resource-intensive materials, while nickel-based chemistries can offer higher energy density.

Solid-state batteries are a promising developing technology, but they are not yet the primary battery type in mass-produced electric cars. Nickel-metal hydride batteries remain important in some hybrids, while lead-acid batteries are mainly used for low-voltage auxiliary systems rather than powering the car’s main traction motor.
