Sid is one of the franchise’s three central characters, alongside the woolly mammoth Manny and the saber-toothed tiger Diego. He is portrayed as talkative, clumsy, optimistic, and frequently troublesome, but he is also a loyal member of the traveling group.

The character is based on prehistoric ground sloths, an extinct group of mammals related to modern tree sloths. Ground sloths were generally much larger than living sloths, and several species lived in North and South America during the Ice Age period.

Sid’s exact species is presented for comedy rather than as a detailed scientific identification. His shaggy appearance and long claws are visual references to extinct sloths.
