What trophy is presented to the champion of the Open Championship?
Answer
Claret Jug
Answer
Claret Jug
The trophy presented to the champion of the Open Championship is the Claret Jug.
Its formal name is the Golf Champion Trophy, but its distinctive silver design and wine-jug shape led to the familiar nickname “Claret Jug.” The trophy is awarded by The R&A, which organizes the championship, one of golf’s four major tournaments.
The Open was first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. The original championship prize was a leather belt, but after Young Tom Morris won the event three times in a row, he was allowed to keep it. A new trophy was commissioned, and the Claret Jug was first awarded in 1873.
The champion traditionally keeps the trophy for one year, returning it before the next Open. The winner receives a replica to retain permanently. It is not the Green Jacket, which belongs to the Masters, the Wanamaker Trophy, which belongs to the PGA Championship, or the Ryder Cup, which is a team competition.
