What total population did Indonesia's 2020 census find?

The story behind the answer

Indonesia's 2020 census found a total population of 270,203,917.

The count came from Indonesia's seventh population census, conducted by Statistics Indonesia, or BPS. Its reference date was September 2020, and the census used a population-registration approach supplemented by online and conventional data collection. This helped officials count residents across Indonesia's enormous archipelago.

The total included 136,661,899 males and 133,542,018 females. Java remained the country's demographic center: the island held more than half of Indonesia's population, despite occupying only a small share of the nation's total land area. This concentration helps explain the importance of migration, urbanization and infrastructure planning in Indonesian statistics.

The 2020 result is often confused with the 2010 census total of 237,641,326, one of the tempting wrong answers here. Indonesia therefore added more than 32 million people over the decade. The census figure is a historical count, not a current population estimate, so later annual estimates will naturally be higher.
