Alan Sugar is commonly known by the title Lord Sugar.
Sugar was appointed to the House of Lords in 2009 as a life peer. His formal title is Baron Sugar of Clapton, in the London Borough of Hackney, but “Lord Sugar” is the short form widely used in broadcasting and public life.
He is a businessman, broadcaster and former owner of Amstrad. His peerage is separate from his commercial achievements and from his television appearances, although all three have contributed to his public profile.
The title is sometimes incorrectly described as “Sir Sugar.” A life peer is addressed as Lord, not Sir, and the title is not hereditary. The formal barony identifies the legal title behind the familiar name.
