C.S. Lewis gave his book based on BBC radio talks the title Mere Christianity. The broadcasts were delivered during the Second World War and later revised into book form.

Lewis’s BBC talks were intended to explain basic Christian beliefs to a broad audience rather than promote one denomination. The talks were later collected in three sections: “Christian Behaviour,” “Beyond Personality,” and the introductory “Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe.”

The title does not mean Christianity is insignificant. In Lewis’s usage, “mere” referred to the central beliefs shared across historic Christian traditions. The book is therefore different from The Problem of Pain, which is a separate work on suffering.
