What title did C.S. Lewis give his 1943 book of philosophical lectures on education and morality?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis gave his 1943 book of philosophical lectures on education and morality the title The Abolition of Man. The work developed from the Riddell Memorial Lectures that Lewis delivered at the University of Durham in 1943.

The book examines moral education, the nature of value, and the danger of treating human judgments as nothing more than subjective feelings. Lewis argues for an objective moral order, which he calls the Tao, and criticizes approaches to education that he believed weakened reason and moral formation.

The Abolition of Man is not a novel and is separate from Lewis’s apologetic works such as Mere Christianity. Its title refers to the possibility that technological power and a rejection of objective values could ultimately undermine the qualities that make humans fully human.
