The team that follows a hot-air balloon by road during a flight is called the chase crew.
A hot-air balloon normally lands wherever the wind carries it, so the pilot often cannot return to the launch field. The chase crew follows from the ground, using roads and communication with the pilot to reach the landing area.
After landing, the crew helps secure the balloon, release the remaining air, pack the envelope and transport the basket and equipment. A typical chase vehicle may carry the balloon's storage bag, ropes and other recovery gear.
The chase crew is not the same as the pilot or passengers. It provides ground support before, during and after the flight, and it is especially important when the balloon lands in a field or another remote location.
