What team drafted Andrei Svechnikov in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft?

The story behind the answer

The Carolina Hurricanes drafted Andrei Svechnikov in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Carolina selected the Russian right wing with the second overall pick on June 22, 2018, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Svechnikov entered the draft after playing for the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League. He was widely regarded as one of the draft's elite offensive prospects, known for his powerful shot, scoring ability, size, and creativity. The Buffalo Sabres selected Rasmus Dahlin first overall, and Carolina chose Svechnikov immediately afterward. The Montreal Canadiens selected Jesperi Kotkaniemi third.

The selection was important in the Hurricanes' rebuilding process and gave the club a high-profile young forward to develop alongside its emerging core. Svechnikov became the first player born in the 2000s to score an NHL goal, doing so during the 2018–19 season. A common mix-up is confusing the Hurricanes with the Arizona Coyotes, who selected fifth overall in the same draft. Arizona chose Canadian forward Barrett Hayton, not Svechnikov.
