Gandalf wields Glamdring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Glamdring is an ancient sword made in Gondolin during the First Age. In The Hobbit, Gandalf discovers it in the trolls’ hoard along with two other notable blades: Thorin Oakenshield takes Orcrist, while Bilbo receives the short sword later called Sting. Elrond identifies the weapons as relics of the lost Elvish city.
The sword’s name is translated as “Foe-hammer.” It is especially associated with Gandalf’s authority and his history as a powerful enemy of evil. In The Lord of the Rings, Glamdring is among the weapons displayed when the company travels through Middle-earth. A common mix-up is to assign Orcrist to Gandalf, but Orcrist belongs to Thorin. Sting is Bilbo’s and later Frodo’s blade, while Andúril is Aragorn’s reforged sword.
