What sword does Bilbo Baggins find in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins finds the sword Sting in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Bilbo discovers Sting in a troll hoard alongside two larger Elvish swords, Glamdring and Orcrist. Because the other weapons are too large for him, he takes the short blade and eventually gives it the name Sting.

The sword glows blue when Orcs or other Goblin-kind are nearby. That warning becomes useful during Bilbo’s journey and later helps Frodo in The Lord of the Rings.

Bilbo gives Sting to Frodo before the Fellowship leaves Rivendell. Frodo carries it through many dangers, including the tunnels of Cirith Ungol. Sting is not the same sword as Aragorn’s Andúril, which is reforged from the shards of Narsil.
