What sport did J.K. Rowling invent for the wizarding world?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling invented Quidditch as the wizarding world’s main broomstick sport.

Quidditch first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where Harry joins the Gryffindor team as a Seeker. Two teams play on flying broomsticks, using a Quaffle, two Bludgers, and a Golden Snitch. The Seeker who catches the Snitch usually earns 150 points and ends the match.

Rowling has said that the name “Quidditch” was created for the fictional game rather than adapted from an existing sport. The books give Quidditch a detailed history, professional teams, school competitions, and international tournaments.

Real-world adaptations of the game became popular at universities and community events. These versions use running players and modified rules because participants do not actually fly. They are inspired by Rowling’s fictional sport but are separate from the books’ magical game.
