McDonald’s launched the worldwide slogan “I’m Lovin’ It” in 2003, beginning with a German campaign.
The campaign was created after McDonald’s sought a more contemporary global identity. The phrase came from a campaign developed by the German agency Heye & Partner and was adapted for international use. Its informal wording was intended to sound energetic, conversational, and accessible across markets.
The launch included music associated with Justin Timberlake, whose recording helped give the campaign a strong pop-culture presence. McDonald’s retained the English phrase in many countries, while local advertising often translated or adapted surrounding copy.
“I’m Lovin’ It” replaced earlier slogans in the company’s central brand communications and became one of McDonald’s longest-running global taglines. It is distinct from “You Deserve a Break Today,” the major slogan used by the company during an earlier advertising era.
