The red-and-white emblem on Greenland’s national flag is a circle.
Greenland’s flag, called Erfalasorput, has two horizontal fields: white above red. A large circle near the hoist is divided horizontally, with its upper half red and lower half white. The design was adopted on 21 June 1985, Greenland’s national day.
The offset circle represents the sun and the ice that surrounds Greenland. Its reversed color arrangement across the two fields creates a strong visual link between the emblem and the background.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Its flag differs from Denmark’s Dannebrog, which is a red field with a white Scandinavian cross. The Greenlandic design was selected through a public competition and became the territory’s first distinct flag.
