What script did J.R.R. Tolkien create for writing many Elvish languages?

The story behind the answer

Tengwar is the script J.R.R. Tolkien created for writing many Elvish languages.

Tolkien designed Tengwar as a detailed writing system with distinct characters for consonants and vowel marks. In the mythology, the Elf Fëanor invented it, and different peoples adapted it for their own languages. Tolkien’s manuscripts show that he used Tengwar for both fictional texts and ordinary English phrases.

Tengwar is sometimes confused with Cirth, another writing system in Tolkien’s legendarium. Cirth consists mainly of angular runes and was associated particularly with Dwarves, although other peoples used it too. Tengwar appears prominently in objects and inscriptions connected with Middle-earth, including the One Ring’s inscription in the Black Speech of Mordor.
