Tengwar is the script used for the inscription on J.R.R. Tolkien’s One Ring.
The Ring inscription is written in Tengwar, a writing system created by Tolkien for the Elves. The words are in the Black Speech of Mordor, not in an Elvish language: “One Ring to rule them all...” The script and the language are therefore different parts of the inscription’s design.
Tengwar is sometimes called the Fëanorian script within Tolkien’s mythology. Cirth is another writing system used in Middle-earth, especially by Dwarves and other peoples, but it is not the script seen on the Ring. Tolkien’s attention to letter forms, writing modes and linguistic history helped give his fictional cultures distinctive identities.
