Ray Kroc acquired McDonald’s in 1961, formalizing his corporate control of the chain.
Kroc had become the McDonald brothers’ franchise agent after seeing the efficiency of their San Bernardino restaurant. He focused on expanding the operating model through standardized restaurants, franchise agreements, training, and consistent branding.
In 1961, Kroc bought the rights to the McDonald’s business from Richard and Maurice McDonald. This transaction allowed him to pursue expansion without the brothers retaining control of the company’s future direction. Kroc later made McDonald’s one of the most recognizable restaurant brands in the world.
The acquisition did not mean Kroc invented the original restaurant system. The brothers developed the Speedee Service System and the first restaurant concept, while Kroc drove large-scale expansion and corporate development. That distinction is central to McDonald’s branding history.
