What recurring artifact is called an Apple of Eden in Assassin's Creed?

The story behind the answer

An Apple of Eden is a type of Piece of Eden in Assassin's Creed.

Pieces of Eden are powerful artifacts created by the Isu, an advanced civilization that existed before recorded human history in the series' fictional mythology. Apples are typically spherical devices capable of influencing minds, projecting images, and producing other extraordinary effects.

The artifacts drive many conflicts because both Assassins and Templars seek them for different reasons. Their powers are often associated with control, which makes them especially important to the series' free-will theme.

The Apple of Eden is not the same thing as the Animus or the Hidden Blade. The Animus is a machine used to access genetic memories, while the Hidden Blade is an Assassin weapon. The term Piece of Eden covers several artifact types, including Apples and Staves.
