What pseudonym does the protagonist use in C.S. Lewis’s space trilogy?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s space trilogy is Elwin Ransom.

Ransom is the central character of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. In the first novel, he is a Cambridge philologist who is abducted and taken to Mars, which the inhabitants call Malacandra.

The name “Ransom” is significant within the trilogy because it identifies the recurring hero while also carrying suggestive religious and literary associations. Lewis combines planetary adventure with questions about language, colonialism, science, power, and humanity’s place in the universe.

Mark Studdock is a major character in That Hideous Strength, but he is not the trilogy’s continuing protagonist. Devine appears in the first novel, and Orual is the narrator of Lewis’s separate mythological novel Till We Have Faces.
