What prison film starring Tim Robbins was based on a story by Stephen King?

The story behind the answer

The prison film starring Tim Robbins and based on a Stephen King story is The Shawshank Redemption.

Released in 1994, the film was written and directed by Frank Darabont. Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne, a banker sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary. Morgan Freeman co-stars as Ellis “Red” Redding, the narrator and Andy’s friend inside the prison.

The screenplay adapts Stephen King’s 1982 novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” published in the collection Different Seasons. Unlike many King adaptations, the story is a prison drama rather than a horror tale. Darabont expanded several characters and plot elements while preserving the novella’s focus on friendship, institutional life, and hope.

The film initially struggled at the box office, partly because it competed with Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump and had a long, unfamiliar title. It later gained a much larger audience through television, home video, and re-releases. The title refers to the fictional Shawshank prison and Andy’s eventual pursuit of freedom.
