What position did NHL legend Bobby Orr play?

The story behind the answer

NHL legend Bobby Orr played the position of defenseman.

Orr was a Canadian defenseman whose skating, puck control and attacking instincts transformed expectations for the position. Rather than staying deep and concentrating mainly on clearing the puck, he frequently carried it up the ice and created scoring chances while still defending.

He played his first ten NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins and his final two with the Chicago Black Hawks. Orr won eight consecutive Norris Trophies as the NHL’s best defenseman from 1968 through 1975, an achievement that remains central to his legacy.

His offensive production was extraordinary for a defenseman: he won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer in 1970 and 1975, becoming the only defenseman to win it. Orr is sometimes remembered primarily for his famous airborne Stanley Cup–winning goal in 1970, but his defining contribution was redefining how an offensive defenseman could play.
