What population is listed for Cambodia's 2019 census?

The story behind the answer

Cambodia’s 2019 census population was 15,552,211.

That figure appears in Cambodia’s historical population table and is marked as a census result. It provides a snapshot of the country at the end of the 2010s, before later population estimates rose above 16 million. The 2019 total was substantially higher than the 2011 figure of 14,701,717, although the annual growth rate had slowed to about 0.71%.

Cambodia’s population history was heavily shaped by war, political upheaval and displacement during the 1970s. The population fell from 7,270,000 in 1971 to 6,682,000 in 1981, an unusual decline associated with the Khmer Rouge period and its aftermath. Recovery and high birth rates then drove rapid growth in the late 20th century.

The answer is sometimes confused with 16,025,000, which is a 2018 population estimate in the same demographic tables. It is also different from later estimates, such as 16,397,000 for 2020. Census totals and annual estimates are not interchangeable.
