What population did mainland China's 2020 census record?

The story behind the answer

What population did mainland China’s 2020 census record? Mainland China’s 2020 census recorded 1,411,778,724 people.

Known as the Seventh National Population Census, the enumeration was carried out from November 1 through December 10, 2020, by about seven million census workers. The result counted residents of mainland China and also included certain Chinese citizens living abroad temporarily, while Hong Kong and Macao were reported separately rather than included in the mainland total.

The census showed that 17.95% of the mainland population was aged 14 or younger, 63.35% was aged 15–59, and 18.70% was aged 60 or older. The male-to-female ratio was 105.07 males for every 100 females, an improvement compared with earlier census results. Guangdong was the most populous provincial-level unit, while the Tibet Autonomous Region was the least populous.

The number is often rounded to 1.412 billion, but trivia questions asking for the census total require the exact figure. Another common mistake is adding Hong Kong and Macao, which would no longer describe mainland China alone.
