What political figure do Obi Wan and Qui Gon rescue from Naboo?

The story behind the answer

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn rescue Queen Amidala from Naboo. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the Jedi are sent to negotiate with the Trade Federation, which has blockaded Naboo and secretly plans an invasion. After escaping an assassination attempt, they reach the planet and help the queen flee the occupied capital of Theed.

Queen Amidala is Naboo’s elected monarch, portrayed by Natalie Portman. Her immediate goal is to protect her people and bring Naboo’s crisis before the Galactic Senate on Coruscant. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan escort her aboard the Royal Starship, although damage during the escape forces them to land on Tatooine.

A common mix-up is the queen’s identity. “Queen Amidala” is her public title and formal name, while Padmé is her personal name. The film later reveals that the queen sometimes uses a handmaiden as a decoy, and Padmé herself adopts the handmaiden role. Thus, “Queen Amidala” is the canonical answer to the question, even though the character is also Padmé Amidala.
