What phrase did McDonald's use for its standardized fast-service method introduced in 1948?
Answer
Speedee Service System
Answer
Speedee Service System
McDonald’s called its standardized fast-service method the Speedee Service System.
Richard and Maurice McDonald developed the system after reorganizing their San Bernardino restaurant. They reduced the menu, arranged the kitchen for efficient production, and standardized preparation and serving procedures. This approach replaced much of the slower carhop-style service common at American drive-ins at the time.
The name connected the operating method to the company’s early mascot, Speedee. It also communicated the central customer benefit: faster service with more predictable food and preparation. The system became a major part of McDonald’s early brand identity and later influenced how franchise restaurants were organized.
The phrase should not be confused with the later “Speedee” character itself. Speedee was the mascot; the Speedee Service System was the operating method. The Golden Arches, meanwhile, identified the restaurants visually but did not name their service process.
