What pen name did C.S. Lewis use when publishing A Grief Observed?
Answer
N.W. Clerk
Answer
N.W. Clerk
C.S. Lewis used the pen name N.W. Clerk when publishing A Grief Observed.
The 1961 book is a collection of reflections on grief, faith, anger, and doubt following the death of Lewis's wife, Joy Davidman. Lewis initially published it anonymously, using the pseudonym N.W. Clerk rather than his well-known name.
The disguise was partly intended to give Lewis privacy and to let readers encounter the book without assuming that its author would offer a polished Christian defense. Some readers and reviewers did not immediately know who had written it. The identity behind the pseudonym later became widely known.
A common mix-up is confusing A Grief Observed with Surprised by Joy. The latter is Lewis's autobiography, while A Grief Observed is a personal meditation on bereavement and religious struggle.
