What pen name did C.S. Lewis use for poetry?
Answer
Clive Hamilton
Answer
Clive Hamilton
C.S. Lewis used the pen name Clive Hamilton for his early poetry.
Lewis published Spirits in Bondage in 1919 under the name Clive Hamilton. The collection appeared while he was still a young man and reflects the bleak, skeptical outlook he associated with his experiences during and after the First World War.
He used another pseudonym, N.W. Clerk, for The Pilgrim’s Regress, published in 1933. His later nonfiction, fiction, and literary criticism were generally published under the name C.S. Lewis, which became internationally recognized.
Clive Hamilton is therefore specifically associated with Lewis’s early poetry, not with The Chronicles of Narnia or his Christian apologetics. The name should not be confused with “Jack,” his personal nickname, which was used by friends rather than as a principal literary pseudonym.
