What password in the original Metroid starts Samus without her Power Suit?

The story behind the answer

The password in the original Metroid that starts Samus without her Power Suit is JUSTIN BAILEY.

Metroid’s Western NES release used a password system rather than the save-file system available in the Japanese Famicom Disk System version. After losing all energy, players could enter a 24-character password to restore a previous game state or activate unusual effects.

“JUSTIN BAILEY” became one of the game’s best-known passwords because it produces a special starting state with Samus out of her armor. The result helped players discover that the armored bounty hunter was actually a woman, a reveal that was easy to miss during ordinary play.

A common mix-up is NARPAS SWORD, another famous Metroid password. That code grants powerful advantages, including effectively unlimited resources, but it is not the password associated with starting as suitless Samus. The original game was released in Japan in 1986 and reached North America on the NES in 1987.
