What Oxford literary group did C.S. Lewis help found?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis helped found the Oxford literary group known as The Inklings.

The Inklings was an informal discussion group associated with the University of Oxford. Its members met to read and discuss works in progress, poetry, mythology, and literature, usually in private rooms or at the Eagle and Child pub.

Lewis was one of the group’s central figures, and J.R.R. Tolkien was another prominent member. Charles Williams and Owen Barfield also participated, while the membership varied over time rather than following a fixed constitution.

The group was not a formal society with an official membership list or published program. The name came from an earlier student literary club at Oxford and was revived for the discussion circle. The Inklings’ conversations influenced the development and criticism of several major twentieth-century fantasy works.
