What organization of writers regularly included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien?
Answer
The Inklings
Answer
The Inklings
The Inklings was the Oxford literary group that regularly included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.
The Inklings met mainly in Lewis’s rooms at Magdalen College and at the Eagle and Child pub in Oxford, which members nicknamed the Bird and Baby. The group was informal rather than a registered society, and its membership changed over time.
Members and regular attendees read works in progress aloud, discussed literature, and debated ideas about Christianity, myth, and storytelling. Tolkien read portions of The Lord of the Rings to the group, while Lewis shared drafts and other writing.
Charles Williams, Owen Barfield, Warren Lewis, and Dorothy L. Sayers were associated with the wider circle at different times. The group was not limited to fantasy writers, and it did not publish a collective manifesto.
