What official Mexican standard number governs tequila production and labeling?

The story behind the answer

NOM-006-SCFI-2012 is the official Mexican standard governing tequila production and labeling.

The standard sets technical requirements for tequila, including the spirit’s categories, production rules, labeling, and commercial identity. “NOM” means Norma Oficial Mexicana, or Mexican Official Standard. The number and year identify the particular regulation.

NOM-006-SCFI-2012 replaced an earlier tequila standard and provides the framework used alongside Mexico’s denomination-of-origin rules. Compliance is checked through Mexico’s tequila regulatory system, including authorized verification procedures.

The code is easy to confuse with standards for other Mexican beverages. NOM-070, for example, is associated with mezcal rather than tequila. That distinction matters because tequila and mezcal are separate protected Mexican spirits with different permitted agave rules and production standards.
