What object is the symbol of the 19th Tirthankara Mallinatha?

The story behind the answer

The object that symbolizes the 19th Tirthankara Mallinatha is a water pot, also called a kalasha. In Jain iconography, this emblem helps devotees identify a Tirthankara’s image when the meditative posture and facial features are otherwise similar.

Mallinatha occupies an unusual place in Jain tradition. Śvētāmbara Jains regard Mallinatha as female, while Digambara Jains regard all 24 Tirthankaras as male and therefore depict Mallinatha as a man. This sectarian difference does not change the associated emblem: the kalasha remains the recognized symbol.

Traditional Jain accounts say Mallinatha was born in Mithila to King Kumbha and Queen Prajnavati. Mallinatha is said to have renounced worldly life, attained omniscience, and ultimately achieved liberation at Sammed Shikhar, also known as Shikharji. These biographical details belong to Jain religious tradition rather than independently verified modern history.

A common mix-up is to confuse the kalasha with a generic vase. “Water pot” is the clearest quiz answer because kalasha specifically denotes the auspicious ceremonial vessel represented in Jain lists of Tirthankara emblems.
