What nickname is commonly given to the Boeing 747?
Answer
Jumbo Jet
Answer
Jumbo Jet
The Boeing 747 is commonly nicknamed the Jumbo Jet.
The name reflects the aircraft’s enormous size when it entered service. Its distinctive raised forward fuselage, created partly to allow a large cargo door, made the 747 instantly recognizable. The upper deck also gave it a distinctive hump-backed profile.
Pan Am introduced the 747 on a passenger service in 1970, and the aircraft soon became a symbol of long-distance mass air travel. Its four-engine layout was designed for intercontinental routes before modern long-range twin-engine aircraft became dominant.
“Queen of the Skies” is another famous nickname for the 747, so it is sometimes confused with “Jumbo Jet.” “Flying Fortress,” by contrast, refers to the Boeing B-17 bomber, not the 747.
