What NHL trophy honors the goalie or goalies on the team allowing the fewest goals?
Answer
William M. Jennings Trophy
Answer
William M. Jennings Trophy
The William M. Jennings Trophy honors the goaltender or goaltenders whose team allows the fewest goals in the NHL regular season.
Under the award’s qualification rules, a goalie must play at least 25 regular-season games for the team with the league’s lowest goals-against total. When two or more goaltenders share that workload, they can share the trophy, which is why many seasons have joint winners.
The award was first presented after the 1981–82 season and is named for William M. Jennings, a longtime New York Rangers governor and president. Before the Jennings was introduced, the Vezina Trophy covered this team-defense achievement; the Vezina later became the award for the league’s outstanding goaltender.
That history causes the most frequent mix-up. The Jennings rewards the strongest team defensive record, while the Vezina recognizes individual goaltending excellence. The Conn Smythe Trophy instead honors the most valuable player during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
