What NHL trophy goes to the regular-season points leader?

The story behind the answer

The Art Ross Trophy goes to the NHL player who leads the league in regular-season points.

Points are calculated by adding goals and assists, so the award rewards total offensive production rather than goals alone. If players finish tied in points, NHL tiebreaking rules determine the winner, beginning with goals and continuing through other statistical criteria.

The trophy is named for Art Ross, a Hall of Fame defenseman, coach, general manager and executive. It was first awarded after the 1947–48 season, when Elmer Lach of the Montreal Canadiens became its inaugural recipient. Wayne Gretzky holds the record with 10 Art Ross wins.

The Art Ross is commonly confused with the Hart Memorial Trophy. A player can lead the league in points without being voted the most valuable player, because the Hart is selected by writers based on value to a team. The Rocket Richard Trophy, by contrast, goes specifically to the goals leader.
