Georgia O'Keeffe began visiting Ghost Ranch regularly in the 1930s.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic landscape in northern New Mexico, known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and broad desert views. O'Keeffe began spending summers there in 1934, and the area supplied subjects for many paintings and drawings.
The ranch became one of the two New Mexico places most closely associated with her, alongside Abiquiú. She later acquired a house in Abiquiú and used both the built environment and surrounding landscape as sources for her work.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe's Abiquiú home because both are in the same general region. They are distinct places: Ghost Ranch is a large landscape property, while her Abiquiú residence was a separate adobe house in the village.
