Ghost Ranch is the New Mexico site whose cliffs became a recurring subject for Georgia O’Keeffe.
Located near Abiquiú in Rio Arriba County, Ghost Ranch is known for colorful cliffs, mesas, and wide desert vistas. O’Keeffe first visited the area in the 1930s and later rented a house there. Its dramatic geology became one of the defining landscapes of her mature work.
She painted the surrounding terrain from different viewpoints and often reduced it to powerful bands of color and simplified forms. The paintings are not conventional topographical records; they use selected shapes, shadows, and contours to convey the visual force of the place.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with the nearby village of Abiquiú or with other Southwestern locations associated with O’Keeffe. Both Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú were important to her, but they are different places. Ghost Ranch is a landscape property, while Abiquiú is the community where she owned her principal adobe home.
