What name does J.R.R. Tolkien give to the giant shepherd of trees in The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien names the giant tree shepherd in The Lord of the Rings Treebeard.

Treebeard is an Ent, an ancient being who resembles and protects trees. His Elvish name is Fangorn, and he is the oldest of the Ents encountered by Merry and Pippin in Fangorn Forest. The hobbits meet him after escaping from the Orcs who captured them.

Treebeard calls an Ent gathering, or Entmoot, to decide how the Ents should respond to Saruman’s destruction of the forest. The Ents eventually march against Isengard, helping to bring down Saruman’s stronghold.

Treebeard is sometimes confused with Fangorn Forest itself, but the names refer to different things: Fangorn is both Treebeard’s personal Sindarin name and the forest’s name in the Common Speech. His character embodies Tolkien’s concern with the destruction of living landscapes.
