What name does J.R.R. Tolkien give to the Ent who leads the Ents?
Answer
Treebeard
Answer
Treebeard
The Ent who leads the Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Treebeard.
Treebeard, also called Fangorn, is one of the oldest living beings in Middle-earth. He is introduced in The Two Towers, where Merry and Pippin encounter him in Fangorn Forest after escaping from the Orcs who captured them. His slow, thoughtful speech reflects the long memory and deliberate nature of the Ents.
At first, Treebeard is reluctant to intervene in the conflict between Saruman and the people of Rohan and Gondor. The hobbits help him understand how Saruman’s destruction of trees threatens Fangorn. He then calls an Entmoot, or gathering of Ents, which leads to the assault on Isengard.
Treebeard is not the same character as Old Man Willow or Tom Bombadil, who belong to different parts of Tolkien’s mythology. Quickbeam is another Ent, younger and faster-moving than Treebeard, but he does not lead the Ents.
