J.R.R. Tolkien called the language spoken by many High Elves Quenya.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most fully developed constructed languages. In his mythology, it was associated especially with the High Elves who lived in Valinor, the blessed realm in the West. Tolkien modeled aspects of its sound and structure on languages he studied, particularly Finnish, while also giving it its own grammar, vocabulary, and history.
In Middle-earth, Quenya became a language of lore, ceremony, and formal names rather than the everyday speech of most Elves. Sindarin served as the more widely used Elvish language in much of the Third Age. The two languages are related within Tolkien’s fictional history but are not interchangeable.
Quenya is sometimes called “High-elven” or “Valinorean” in explanatory discussions. It should not be confused with Khuzdul, the secret language of the Dwarves, or Adûnaic, a language associated with the Men of Númenor.
