Aragorn uses the name Strider while traveling in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
He is introduced at the Prancing Pony in Bree as a mysterious Ranger from the northern lands. The name Strider is the common nickname used for him by the people of Bree, who view the Rangers with suspicion and do not initially know his royal identity.
Aragorn later reveals that he is the heir of Isildur and the rightful claimant to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor. Other names connected with him include Elessar, a royal title, and Thorongil, a name he used during earlier service in Gondor and Rohan.
Strider is therefore not Aragorn’s birth name or final royal title. It is the practical alias that protects his identity during the early part of the story.
