What name does Aragorn receive after reforging Narsil in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

After Narsil is reforged, Aragorn’s sword in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is named Andúril.

Narsil was the sword of Elendil, the founder and first High King of Gondor and Arnor. Elendil carried it against Sauron at the end of the Second Age, and its broken blade was used by Isildur to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. The shards remained an heirloom of Isildur’s descendants.

The sword is reforged in Rivendell before Aragorn begins the final stage of his journey. Aragorn names it Andúril, Flame of the West, linking his personal weapon to the royal heritage of the Númenórean kings. The reforged sword becomes a visible symbol of his claim and responsibility.

Andúril is sometimes confused with the original Narsil or with other famous weapons. Glamdring belongs to Gandalf, Herugrim to Théoden, and Aeglos to the Elven king Gil-galad. They are distinct weapons from different characters and traditions.
