The people of Bree use the name Strider for Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
When Frodo and his companions reach the village of Bree, they meet a mysterious Ranger known locally as Strider. He is initially presented as a weathered traveler with an uncertain reputation rather than as the heir to the throne of Gondor.
Strider is one of Aragorn’s several names and identities. He is also called Aragorn, son of Arathorn; later, he takes the royal name Elessar. His concealed lineage is central to the story because he must move from wandering protector to the legitimate king who can unite the West against Sauron.
The nickname is used in the novel before Aragorn’s ancestry is fully revealed. It is not the same as Elessar, which is a later royal title, or Thorongil, a name Aragorn used during an earlier period of his life.
