McDonaldland was the name McDonald’s used for its fictional character-filled world in 1970s advertising.
The setting provided a shared backdrop for Ronald McDonald and a cast of branded characters. Advertisements presented McDonaldland as a colorful fantasy landscape where characters such as Mayor McCheese, Grimace, the Hamburglar, Captain Crook, and Officer Big Mac could interact.
This approach gave McDonald’s a continuing story world rather than a series of unrelated commercials. It also made the brand especially visible to children, who could recognize recurring characters across television advertisements, restaurant decorations, toys, and other promotions.
McDonaldland should not be confused with “McWorld,” a later McDonald’s promotional concept associated with global culture and the 1990s. McDonaldland refers specifically to the earlier fantasy setting and its character-based advertising universe.
