J.R.R. Tolkien named Aragorn’s reforged sword Andúril.
Andúril is the sword made by reforging the broken blade Narsil, the weapon that cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand during the end of the Second Age. In Tolkien’s fictional history, the Elven-smiths of Rivendell reforge the sword for Aragorn before he begins the journey that leads toward the War of the Ring. The name is commonly translated as “Flame of the West.”
Andúril is sometimes confused with other famous weapons in Tolkien’s stories. Glamdring belongs to Gandalf, Orcrist is associated with Thorin Oakenshield, and Sting is Bilbo’s and later Frodo’s small sword. Narsil and Andúril are related but are not the same stage of the weapon’s history: Narsil is the original broken sword, while Andúril is its reforged form. The sword’s return symbolizes Aragorn’s royal heritage and his emergence as a leader.
