J.R.R. Tolkien gave the name Quenya to the fictional language most associated with the High Elves.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed Elvish languages. Its inspirations include the sounds and structures of Finnish, Latin, and Greek, although it is not simply a translation of any one real language. In Tolkien’s mythology, Quenya developed from the speech of the Elves and became especially connected with the Eldar who reached Aman.
Tolkien created both vocabulary and grammatical systems for Quenya, making it more fully developed than many of the languages that appear only briefly in his fiction. It is used in names, poems, ceremonial expressions, and passages connected with Elvish history. The name itself is often translated as “language” or associated with speech.
Sindarin is the most widely spoken Elvish language in much of The Lord of the Rings, so readers sometimes select it instead. Sindarin and Quenya are related but distinct languages, not alternate spellings of the same tongue.
