J.R.R. Tolkien named his principal Elvish writing system Tengwar.
Tengwar is a constructed script used for several languages in Tolkien’s legendarium, including Quenya and Sindarin. Tolkien designed its letter forms and supplied fictional historical explanations for how the script developed and spread across Middle-earth.
Cirth is the main writing system readers confuse with Tengwar. Cirth consists of runic letters associated particularly with Dwarves, although other peoples used it too. Tengwar is not simply an alphabet for one language: its spelling conventions vary according to the language being written, which is why the same script can represent different phonologies.
