J.K. Rowling named the fictional wizarding sport in the Harry Potter books Quidditch.
Quidditch is played by two teams on flying broomsticks. Players pursue balls called the Quaffle and Bludgers, while the Seeker attempts to catch the Golden Snitch. The sport’s scoring system and specialized positions make it one of the most recognizable elements of the fictional wizarding world.
In the books, the game is played at Hogwarts and in professional wizarding competitions. Rowling has said that the word “Quidditch” was invented for the story rather than borrowed as the established name of a real sport.
Real-world adaptations later developed on foot and adopted modified rules. Some organizations changed the sport’s name to quadball, partly to distinguish real competition from the fictional setting. Those modern variants do not change the original book term: Rowling’s wizarding sport is Quidditch.
