What Mustang II appearance package debuted in 1976 with dual over-the-top racing stripes?

The story behind the answer

The Cobra II was the Mustang II appearance package that debuted in 1976 with dual over-the-top racing stripes. It gave the downsized Mustang a much more aggressive visual identity without creating a separate high-performance model.

The package added a black grille, simulated hood scoop, front and rear spoilers, quarter-window louvers, cobra emblems, and matching lower rocker stripes. Its defining graphics were the paired stripes running over the hood, roof, and rear deck. Cobra II equipment could be ordered with all Mustang II engine choices, so the name primarily described appearance rather than a unique engine or competition specification.

Cobra II is often confused with the 1978 King Cobra, which was a later limited-edition Mustang II with a deep air dam and a large hood snake graphic. It is also distinct from the Mach 1, another Mustang II trim, and from Shelby’s earlier performance Mustangs. The Cobra II proved popular and helped Ford restore some of the Mustang’s sporty image during the late 1970s.
