Captain Picard learns to play the Ressikan flute in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Inner Light.” The instrument becomes the emotional symbol of an entire lifetime that Picard experiences inside a telepathically induced vision.
A probe from the long-dead planet Kataan places Picard in that experience after scanning him. Within minutes aboard the Enterprise, Picard lives decades as Kamin, a villager on the planet. He marries Eline, raises children, becomes involved in village life, and watches Kataan’s climate deteriorate. Kamin learns the flute as part of that life, although only a short time passes for Picard outside the vision.
The flute is not merely a prop from Picard’s childhood or a standard Starfleet instrument. It is a physical keepsake from the Kataan experience, recovered by the Enterprise after the probe completes its mission. Picard later plays it in quiet moments, making it one of the most recognizable objects associated with his character.
